: ART GRANTS :
Awards begin May 15th, apply early for consideration. Grants will be
determined by committee of your peers, so best to be honest with your
request. Projects that demonstrate resourcefulness are favored over
those that just request a large amount of funds.
Awards for art projects at SOAK* generally cover material goods only,
and do not include labor, travel, housing or performance. Performance
artist and troupes might consider applying for itemized material goods
used in their craft (but not for performance, travel or housing). There
is a strong preference for interactive arts and projects that might
return to future events.

Survey for 2013
We’re currently planning this year’s SOAK*, and actively looking for ways to improve your experience. 2012 was the first year in this location and as we return we are considering potential changes, including where best to position camps and projects, other beneficial ways to take advantage of the space. Do you have ideas or feedback? Please take the survey
http://tiny.cc/pdxsurvey
As we finalize more we will make an announcement regarding the placement process and deadlines for SOAK* 2013.
****************************************
Suggest a theme for SOAK* 2013!
Some of the best potential titles combined old concepts in new and unexpected ways, leaving a touch of mystery and open to interpretation. Think “Galactic Monkey Show”, “Unicorns on Ice”, “Mutant Cheerleaders from Outer Space”, (okay, we could go on all day, but we’d like to hear from YOU!).
Submit your suggestions here: http://tiny.cc/soaktheme
****************************************
Volunteer

Our departments include: Gate, DPW, Fire conclave & Fire Perimeter, D'Corps, Medical, Leave-No-trace, Rangers, Stage Crew, Placement, and more; there are many way to contribute. For a complete list, here’s our volunteer sign-up. You can also learn more about these departments at our upcoming Town Hall, on February 17th.

Portland CORE Project UPDATE |
|
|
The Circle Of Regional Effigies (CORE) are a set of effigies that represent regional communities from around the globe at Burning Man. Portland is working on an application for the CORE project this year. This is a community effort, so you are very much invited and encouraged to participate!
In this edition:
* Meeting Update
* Call for Leads
* Submit YOUR Design Idea!
* Resources
* Questions, Feedback & Comments
Meeting Update
****************************************
We had a productive and well attended meeting on Monday to look at project, formulate timelines, discussion leadership and delve into some design ideas. It's a great group of people and the regionals are thrilled to support this project.
Meeting notes are available online at http://tiny.cc/corenotes and key points from the meeting are covered in this announcement, in the following sections.
Call for Leads
****************************************
For those of you interested in taking on a key role in the CORE project, we are looking for Leads in the following areas:
- Design
- Build
- Fire
- Communications/Development
- Transportation
- Project Lead
The lead for each area will be tasked with managing volunteers, meeting with the Project Lead and other leads, contributing to the decision-making process throughout the project, and most likely, will need to be spend some extra time on playa or at least dedicate some during-event playa time to the project. Each lead should have some experience doing what it is their group will be working on. This is not a strict requirement, but it is very helpful, for example, if the Fire Lead has experience planning and monitoring large burns, overseeing perimeter crew, etc.
We are also looking for an overall Project Lead. This person will work to manage the CORE project, working with the Regional Contact and acting as a liaison with Burning Man. Project Management experience and excellent diplomacy skills are desirable.
Anyone can throw their own name in for consideration, or recommend someone else for the role (please make sure they are a willing candidate first!). When you express your interest for a given area, feel free to mention your background/applicable experience for those who don't already know you/your abilities.
If you would like be considered for any of these roles you can join the Facebook group and place your nomination directly by Friday January 11th, or email core (at) @burningmanportland.com and tell us about your interest. The group will be selecting the leads online, voting to complete by Monday January 14th. So get your nomination in, right now.
Submit YOUR Design Idea!
****************************************
We are also actively soliciting YOUR design ideas for the effigy. Anyone can submit a design idea for consideration. The deadline for your concept submission is Sunday, January 27, 2013. Everyone is also welcome to participate in this group and help select the final design. Once the design is selected we will have two weeks to prepare your design and submit the CORE application to Burning Man, due on February 15th.
Your design concept does not need to be "build-ready", however the more practical and developed your presentation is the more likely people might vote for it? Best of luck, and we can't wait to see what you come up with! Submit your designs, concepts and ideas online in the Facebook group page, or via email at core (at) burningmanportland.com

News & Updates |
|
|
|
I hope everyone is enjoying the winter holidays. Just wanted to give
you a quick update as we look ahead to the coming year and a few
things that are percolating during the winter season.
New Regional Contact Selection Process
Burning Man is in the final stages of the process for expanding the
regional contact team here in Portland. This process began early this
year with announcements at a town hall. Since then there was open call
for participation, community feedback, and an extensive interview
process. Each of the candidates who have stepped forward and expressed
interest in becoming a regional contract are to be commended. This is a
truly amazing and talented group. The Burning Man Project has shown
considerable thoughtfulness and care throughout this process and are
currently making their decision. Once the new RC's are confirmed,
announcements and introductions should follow.
Looking forward to 2013
The next public event will be a Town Hall in early spring to discuss
the year ahead. Prior to this I will submit a survey to gather your
expectations for 2013, including the types of events, new events,
changes and improvements we need to make. Our goal is to have confirmed
dates and locations booked well ahead for all our 2013 events. We
currently have pending reservations and plan to announce by the Town
Hall.
Your feedback and suggestions are welcome anytime throughout the year.
The regional contact team email is portland (at) burningman.com. I am also
happy to discuss in person. We consider all feedback seriously and it
truly helps. Thank you to everyone who has already reached out.
The Portland community is amazing and the Burning Man Project has
really taken notice. I’m thrilled to be working with such an amazing
group of people, leads, volunteers, and artists. You make these events
happen and I’m humbled to help in any way. I’m very much looking
forward to the coming year and working with you! I hope you all have
the best of holidays, see you soon!
Warm Regards,
-Tzara

Decompression 2012 News |
|
|
Decompression 2012 will be on October 21st at Cathedral
Park.
This is a free event and open to everyone. We hope you can join us!
Green Anchors and a number of theme camps will also be having an event on
October 20th called "Burn Up". We fully support this event and
encourage everyone to attend however for formal reasons this will not be an official Burning Man Portland decompression.
"Burn Up" Event:

Portland Burning Man Decompression, Park Day Event:

Longer Explanation & Details...
After much discussion and deliberation, the Burning Man Regional Contact, event Leads, and SOAK LLC decided to step back and
let Green Anchors and a collaboration of theme camps host the event on
October 20th as planned. They have decided to name the event
"BurnUp." This was not an easy decision and we sincerely apologize for
the change. We fully intend to reevaluate our process so that next
year's Decompression event reflects the expectations of the community.
We are also looking at trying something new next year, setting our
sights on totally new concepts with renewed potential.
We would like to extend a HUGE thanks to all of the volunteers, camps,
artists and performers that expressed their intent to help make this
event a success. Your support and participation are the heart of our
events. You are incredibly important. Stay tuned for updates regarding
the event on October 20th. Thank you thank you thank you.
Okay, the good news! You can still keep this date and location on your
calendar. "Burn Up" will be an event at Green Anchors. We'll update the
event information on Facebook accordingly:
http://www.facebook.com/events/275885982529853/
In lieu of hosting Saturday's event we are now hosting a Park Day at
nearby Cathedral Park on Sunday, October 21st. This is a free event and
open to all. Event details here:
http://www.facebook.com/events/179252562211555/
Thank you again for your support and we look forward to seeing you at
Burn Up and the Park Day. If you have any questions please contact us
