Portland Town Hall 2012 |
|
|
|
About once a year or so we gather and talk about our community, our hopes, dreams, ideas and plans for the future. This town hall is dedicated for our local community, but we may allow some time for both open discussion, perhaps general discussion regarding Burning Man topics as needed.
Portland Burning Man Town Hall
Saturday, March 24th, 2012
4:00pm - 6:45pm
This is a chance for you to meet other people in your Burning Man community in a focused, yet relaxed setting. There will be presentations by the regional contact, presentations for current year, goals for the future, department leads for SOAK* and art projects. I hope you can make it! There is an adjacent coffee shop if you come early grab a tasty beverage for the informal meet & greet. I hear Camp Cannibal is going be there too. Afterwards some people might head down the street to the Horse Brass pub.

SOAK* Updates |
|
|
|
Effigy. Having an effigy is a primary consideration for SOAK*, and Prindel Creek offers a large meadow with ample room for art projects and an effigy this year in addition to the Appetizer burn and a potential Temple project. There is much potential to look forward to! On that note, we are accepting proposals for the SOAK* effigy design. Some excellent designs have already been submitted. If you have a design concept you would like to submit for consideration, please email effigy.soak2012 (at) burningmanportland.com. It is not necessary for the effigy to be related to the theme, but it's worth consideration and we would like to give some time for proposals that are designed around the theme (we'll be settling on a theme about a week after they are presented at the the Town Hall). Final deadline for effigy submissions is April 15th. We hope to see something bigger and bolder that people can climb on. You can also suggest a theme for SOAK online at: http://bit.ly/fW2Wk9
Center camp features a stage for music and performances, and a covered pavilion with benches for folks to gather. There are two public designated fire pits. As always, open ground camp fires are not permitted.
Swimming. There's a freshwater creek with a small waterfall that runs along the site which will give people a chance to cool off.
Getting there. Prindel Creek Farm is approximately 2.5 hours from Portland with pavement up to the main gate near the main field. So we will be able to accommodate Art Cars and Mutant Vehicles this year. The main field is also larger so we'll have more room for parking near the camp site. As in past years we'll likely need to prohibit super-size RVs and trailers to make sure there's room for everyone, and we do expect higher attendance this year.
We're still working on a template for the site, and we will be sorting out placement for theme camps and projects. The crew is excited about the space and we see a lot of possibilities here. More details soon and at the town hall. For more information about the new location please attend the upcoming town hall.

ABOUT THRESHOLD
Birthed from creative efforts of the infamous art collaborative Monkey Puzzle, the Threshold event series has evolved from three years as a grand Portland New Year’s Eve event (2007-2009) into a one-of-a-kind, high production value show fusing top live and electronica musical acts together for one explosive thematic party at the onset of the Chinese New Year! As we've danced with the Tiger and Rabbit (2010-2011), we now celebrate our good fortunes in 2012 with the lucky Dragon...

ABOUT PORTLAND ARTIST CLINIC
Members of the arts communities frequently lack access to health care because of their status as independent contractors in lower income brackets. Without affordable access to group insurance, long-term preventative health care is out of reach for many of them. The health care providers of PAC aim to provide local artists with the medical services and attention they deserve.

Burnout 2011, The Portland Oregon Decompression
"Burnout" is an interactive arts festival. This event will consider
community and the transformation of interior city spaces. We offer
artists and performers a chance to express themselves in an open forum.
This is not a craft fair, or commercial venture. We have no
marketplace. We
are driven by community and entirely volunteer run.
We've got space at Refuge and the ODOT lots ("Black Top City"). This
means tons of open space for large theme camps, mutant vehicles, fire
arts, along with covered space for bands, music, & more over the
weekend at Refuge.
We are hoping earlier in the season will increase our chances of awesome
weather, either way Refuge offers a great indoor (covered) space, only
two blocks from the North ODOT lot.
So calling everyone, theme camps, art cars, artists & performers,
come strut your stuff! While this is not "car" camping in the woods...
we want you to bring your shade/rain/dome/chillspaces. This is your
temporary city, your camp, a place to transform your community &
your world.
Our event follows these guiding principles:
Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Self-reliance, Self-expression,
Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation,
and Immediacy.

ABOUT THE FILM: Dust & Illusions explores 30 years of history of the Burning Man event. Born in the underground of San Francisco in the 1980s, the festival became the largest counter- cultural event in North America. It is unique in that it is created by the people who come to the event, the participants, not the organizers, and in that sense it has survived its original ideals/utopias, but the ideas have been eroded by time, pressure from the larger society. The film is a look at this necessary evolution and expansion and questions our ability to stand behind those ideals over a lifetime.
