CORE: The Circle of Regional Effigies. There's an interesting project brewing for the burn 2011, moving forward with support from the Burning Man Project (details forthcoming). I'd like to share this overview about CORE and see if there's any interest from Portland. I know there are some rockstars and awesome crews that might want to give this a shot!
CORE: The Circle of Regional Effigies will be a ring of effigies that will surround the Burning Man in Black Rock City 2011, each created by alocal community from within the Burning Man Regional Network. Some will include representations of effigies burned at Regional events.
The CORE effigies will be placed in a circle approximately 500’ out, andaround the Man. Each piece will (approximately) be no larger than 20' high or wide. Effigies will be credited by geographic area or regional event in promotional materials and public information. Effigies will coordinate with the Burning Man Art Department and art grant process. Effigies may be (potentially) eligible for partial grants, pending budget approval, and may have flame effects. While exact size and criteria are forthcoming, the regional crews will be responsible for the entire lifespan of the project from grant writing to construction, coordination with art department, coordination with the Fire Art Safety Team, responsible for burning their effigy AND Leave No Trace. Each team will provide leads for various aspects of the project.
There may be more support from Burning Man, until details are released we really cannot say. Committed crews will likely find local support as well. It's a TON of work. It's also something that many of you do on a ~weekend~ for fun. Right now, I'd like to get a sense of the level of interest from Portland, and to see who is interested. Portland would need aplan, leads, architect, crew etc. My role will be liaison, support, and to facilitate the process. There is a limited number of effigies that may participate, so commitment earlier rather than later may be a deciding factor for participation.
I'll take a moment to suggest the @ppetizer effigies have a good track record as a project. Plus there's time to consider some more elaborate projects we've had at Soak*, that youcould put together. The effort is up to you.
CORE is starting to shape up, into a really cool project. Please discuss (Portland-List), or email direct if you are interested, or have any questions.
I will be updating announcements as information is released.
